About SMI Membranes

SMI Membranes is a Saudi deep-tech startup building the next generation of high-performance RO and NF membrane technologies for desalination, industrial water treatment, and wastewater reuse. Our long-term mission is to establish a fully localized membrane manufacturing facility in Saudi Arabia, supported by robust R&D capabilities, advanced materials, and strong national partnerships.

We are currently in early growth mode and preparing for our first production milestones. We are now looking for a Commercial Leader who can help us build the market presence of SMI as a trusted KSA membrane brand.

The Role : Business Development Manager in Water Sector

You will be the commercial lead responsible for building strategic relationships, generating large-scale opportunities, and introducing SMI membranes to key clients across utilities, EPC contractors, and industrial operators in Saudi Arabia.

This is not a typical sales role rather it is a founding‑era commercial position where you will shape SMI’s go‑to‑market strategy, customer pipeline, partnerships, and long‑term business development roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

Market Development & Commercial Strategy

  • Build and implement SMI’s commercial strategy for RO / NF membrane products.
  • Identify major opportunities within municipal, industrial, and utility markets in KSA.
  • Develop pricing models, commercial plans, and product positioning.
  • Customer & Partner Engagement

  • Establish and grow relationships with our leints such as SWA, SWCC, NWC, Marafiq, ACWA Power, Veolia, Ajlan Bro ... etc.
  • EPC contractors and O&M service providers
  • Conduct technical‑commercial meetings with plant managers, procurement teams, and engineering consultants.
  • Gather customer requirements and report feedback to the technical team.
  • Sales Execution & Pipeline Management

  • Build and maintain a high‑value pipeline of membrane supply contracts.
  • Lead end‑to‑end deal execution including proposals, negotiations, and contract finalization.
  • Support tender submissions and supplier registrations across relevant platforms.
  • Achieve quarterly and annual revenue targets.
  • Cross‑Functional Leadership

  • Work closely with founders and technical teams to align customer needs with product capabilities.
  • Provide market intelligence to guide R&D priorities and production planning.
  • Represent SMI in exhibitions, conferences, and government / industry meetings.
  • Required Qualifications

  • 5–12 years of experience in desalination, RO membrane sales, or industrial water treatment solutions.
  • Strong existing network across KSA utilities, EPC contractors, or industrial clients.
  • Proven track record in B2B technical sales or business development.
  • Deep understanding of RO / NF membranes, pretreatment, process operations, or similar technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills in Arabic and English.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑moving startup environment with ambiguity and high growth potential.
  • Preferred (but not required)

  • Experience working with membrane manufacturers or distributors.
  • Knowledge of KSA tendering systems (Etimad, Marafiq, municipal tenders).
  • Background in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or water process technology.
  • Prior involvement in early‑stage companies or new business units.
