Responsibilities
Lead and manage the university’s metal and wood workshops, ensuring they are safe, efficient, and fully functional.
Provide faculty and students with access to fabrication spaces that support prototyping, set construction, and artistic production.
Promote a hands‑on learning environment that enhances creativity and technical proficiency.
Guarantee compliance with institutional, legal, and industry standards for workshop operations.
Strategic Responsibilities
Develop and enforce policies for workshop use, access, and safety.
Align workshop operations with academic and project requirements across disciplines.
Contribute to long‑term planning for workshop upgrades, expansions, and technology integration.
Support sustainability through responsible material management and waste reduction.
Use feedback and performance reports to inform improvements and innovation.
Operational Responsibilities
Oversee daily workshop operations, ensuring readiness, proper equipment setup, and safe working conditions.
Supervise use of machinery, tools, and materials (welding, CNC routing, joinery, sanding, cutting).
Conduct regular safety audits and provide inductions / training to students, faculty, and staff.
Provide hands‑on technical support and troubleshooting for academic and creative projects.
Supervise workshop technicians and support staff, ensuring adequate coverage and performance monitoring.
Coordinate with vendors for equipment servicing, upgrades, and material supply.
Manage inventory of tools, raw materials, consumables, and safety gear in collaboration with the Inventory & Asset Manager.
Maintain records of workshop usage, maintenance logs, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
Generate reports and recommendations for the School Operations Manager.
Industry Experience
10+ years of experience managing metal and wood workshops or fabrication labs, ideally in academic or creative institutions.
Proven expertise in woodworking, metalworking, fabrication machinery, and safety standards.
Familiarity with interdisciplinary workflows across architecture, design, theater, and visual arts.
Experience using or integrating digital fabrication tools (CNC, laser cutters, 3D printers).
Management Capabilities
Strong leadership in managing technicians and coordinating vendors.
Skilled in planning procurement, material use, and resource allocation.
Experience designing and enforcing usage policies and safety procedures.
Project management ability to align workshop readiness with academic and creative timelines.
Interpersonal Skills
Strong collaboration and communication skills with faculty, students, and staff.
Ability to mentor students and provide technical guidance in project execution.
Problem‑solving skills in resolving technical challenges under time‑sensitive conditions.
Flexible and adaptable to support diverse and interdisciplinary creative outputs.
