Position Reports to :
Data Center Electrical Engineer
Summary Responsible for the inspection, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and fueling of Prime generators and related systems in a data center to ensure continuous power availability and compliance with safety and operational standards.
Primary Functions and Essential Responsibilities
Generator Inspection, Troubleshooting, Operation & Maintenance
Check generator status at the start of the shift.
Perform daily visual inspections of generators, fuel systems, and batteries.
Check oil, coolant, and fuel levels.
Inspect air filters, belts, hoses, and other critical components.
Monitor and operate diesel generators as per standard operating procedures (SOPs) on the approved schedule.
Monitor generator performance (load, voltage, frequency, and alarms).
Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance (PPM), and operational checks as per the approved schedule.
Perform OFF load testing as per the approved schedule.
Identify and report faults or abnormal conditions immediately.
Perform minor repairs or adjustments as required.
Troubleshoot generator issues and report faults to the Electrical Engineer immediately.
Coordinate with engineers for major repairs and contact 3rd party vendors as needed.
Ensure generators are ready for emergency load conditions at all times.
Keep generators clean to maintain optimal performance and prevent dust, debris, or contamination-related issues.
Check battery status and electrolyte level; report abnormalities and take corrective action.
Verify battery charger function and voltage within normal range at all times.
Lead on-load testing activities and ensure generators are healthy and able to take the required load.
Collect fuel and oil samples as scheduled and coordinate with the reporting Engineer or Facility Manager to send samples for analysis; record results and take corrective action if any anomalies are detected.
Fuel System Management
Manage fueling of generators according to schedules and fuel level requirements.
Maintain accurate fuel consumption and inventory records.
Report low fuel levels or any irregularities.
Ensure there are no fuel leaks in the system; inspect pipes, hoses, pumps, and connections daily and report issues immediately.
Ensure fueling system is set to automatic mode and ready to supply fuel during utility power loss to ensure uninterrupted power availability.
Check that fueling line valves are open according to the Sequence of Operation (SOO) to guarantee continuous fuel supply.
Put fueling system in manual mode if automatic system fails as per EOP to maintain operation.
Check for active alarms on the fueling system and rectify immediately to maintain uninterrupted fuel supply.
Maintain logs for generator operation, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
Education / Certification / Knowledge
High school diploma or technical certification in electrical / mechanical engineering or related field.
Proven experience in generator operation, maintenance, and fueling, preferably in data centers or critical facilities.
Knowledge of diesel generator systems, electrical distribution, and safety standards.
Familiarity with Health & Safety guidelines and procedures for operating mechanical or energized equipment.
Experience
Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in generator inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
Proven experience in generator operation, maintenance, and fueling, preferably in data centers or critical facilities.
Experience in equipment commissioning, startup / shutdown, LOTO (Lockout-Tagout) and isolation, as well as performance monitoring and alarm management.
Skills / Abilities
Demonstrated skills in diagnosis, analysis and problem solving.
Ability to work a rotational on-call shift.
Ability to work under pressure and be adaptable.
Ability to work in a team environment.
Ability to diagnose root causes of equipment failures.
Ability to communicate effectively with vendors who perform maintenance on the generator equipment.
